Top Symptoms of Various Types of Leukemia

The defenses of a castle are necessary in order to protect the royalty. But, what happens when the defenses start using up more space and resources than they actually need? The castle crumbles and so does the royalty. Similarly, our body has a defense mechanism that protects us from attacks of germs and diseases. It is our immune system that protects us from infections. The immune system uses white blood cells in our body to fend away attacks from foreign bacteria and viruses. When the amount of these white blood cells increases beyond need, they form a kind of cancer in the blood. This imbalance in the red and white blood cells is called leukemia.

There are several cases of leukemia that come out each year and all of them have different kinds of effects on the body of the victim. There are generally four kinds of Leukemia that affect the human genome. Let’s study the symptoms of different types of leukemia in detail.

Symptoms of Different Types of Leukemia
Leukemia, being a type of blood cancer, affects the organs of the body that are important for the circulation or production of blood. The symptoms of different kinds of leukemia will help you know which one is struggling with.

  • Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia
Acute lymphoblastic leukemia is the kind of leukemia that gets worse very quickly and can be fatal in most cases. This leukemia penetrates the body from the bone marrow. It affects the lymphocytes (a kind of white blood cell) in the inner soft tissues of your bone that generates blood cells. This leukemia shows symptoms like

    • Fatigue
    • Fever
    • Weight loss and loss of appetite
    • Tiny red spots under the epidermis
    • Shortness of breath and dizziness due to lack of RBCs
  • Acute Myeloid Leukemia
Acute myeloid leukemia deters the proper growth of bone marrow cells and affects the production of blood cells in the body, Its general victims are those that have had chemotherapy treatment, have been exposed to chemicals like benzene from paint factories and smoke, and from genetic conditions. The different symptoms of this type of leukemia are

    • Fatigue
    • Fever
    • Unusual Bleeding or Bruising of the skin
    • Headaches or migraines
    • Red spots on the skin
    • A swollen liver or spleen which is the result of impure blood
    • And low immunity causing frequent infections and seasonal cases of flu.
  • Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia
Chronic lymphocytic leukemia is a type of leukemia that might not even need treatment sometimes and minimal symptoms show up. CLL unlike AML increases the production of white blood cells in the body. An abnormally higher rate than what’s needed. You can have this leukemia if you are middle-aged or older, have leukemia in the family tree, or if you have European or Russian ancestry. The symptoms of CLL are different than other types of leukemia. You’ll have

    • Swollen lymph nodes in specific places such as the neck, armpit, stomach, or groin
    • Pain along with bloating of the stomach because of inflated spleens
    • Fatigue
    • Infections and weight loss
  • Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia
CML is the type of blood cancer that has mostly one cause, enduring high amounts of radiation. It was one of the cancers found prevalent in Chernobyl survivors. This type of leukemia shows symptoms in two stages and it grows of its own accord and subsides in some for years. The symptoms for it are:

    • No symptoms in early chronic phase
    • After entering an accelerated phase you may feel constant exhaustion
    • Night sweats
    • Loss of appetite
    • Swelling on left side
    • Pain in the bones
    • In the advanced blastic phase, you’ll have unexplained bleeding
    • Skin infections and swollen glands

Leukemia can be diagnosed in your regular body diagnosis. Or during a common blood test which will define your blood cell count. Having frequent symptoms is a sign that your blood has a problem. Visit a blood specialist and get your blood or bone marrow diagnosed.
