Treatments Available for Skin Cancer

Skin cancer has various types and each of them progresses at different rates. Different methods are used to treat the condition depending on various factors. The treatment for each individual is selected by the doctor according to the nature and stage of cancer.

Radiation treatment
This type of treatment consists of using radiation over the infected part of the skin to put an end to the cancer cell regeneration. It is an intensive form of treatment that works in two ways: external or internal. In the external method, the affected skin is exposed to an x-ray machine that emits cancer-killing beams. On the other hand, for the internal treatments, a radioactive substance may be inserted into cancer cells through a catheter or needle. It is used in the advanced stages of cancer.

Surgery
Surgery is an effective treatment method for some of the different types of skin cancer that are nearer the surface of the body. Squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma are two types of skin cancers that are removed through this method. The tumor can be removed surgically. The doctor then repairs the edges of the wound. This type of surgery is called excisional surgery. Skin grafts are required to close the wound in case of big tumors.

Another type of surgery that treats the different types of skin cancer is Mohs surgery, which is used to cut the skin layer by layer under the microscope. The surgeon needs to be careful and precise and constantly check for other signs to ensure that no cancer cells have been missed.

Cryosurgery
This is a revolutionary method that uses liquid nitrogen to freeze the cancerous region and destroy them. Cryosurgery is used in the early stages of skin cancer.

Laser surgery
It is a type of surgery that uses laser beams to remove the cancerous territory. The laser surgery is mainly used to treat actinic keratosis.

Photodynamic therapy
Photodynamic therapy cures different types of skin cancer using a combination of drug and artificial laser in this process, the medication is ingested into the body and it mixes with the cancer cells. The laser light is flashed over the tumor, thereupon activating the drug.

Immunotherapy
Immunotherapy is a type of cancer treatment process that inserts medication into the body to improve the immune system.

Chemotherapy
In this process, medication is ingested to aim at stopping the cancer cells from spreading and growing internally. This is prescribed generally after the surgery isn’t successful.

Targeted drug therapy
Targeted therapy does less damage than the process that requires medication to fight cancer, like chemotherapy. The different types of skin cancer like basal cell carcinoma are treated with inhibitors such as Vismodegib.

Chemical peel
In this case, the area that looks infected is covered with a chemical solution that erodes the top layer of the skin. It is also called chemexfoliation.

There are various treatment methods available to treat skin cancer. The doctor understands the type of cancer and prepares the treatment plan accordingly.
